Research Online: know the other side before the call

A project can now research the company, the role and the person on the public web and save the notes, with links, as a source your answers can use.

On 30 September 2026, MagicInterview gained Research Online. A project can now read the public web for you before the call and save what it finds, with links, as a source your answers can use.

What changed#

  • A research agent for each project. Research Online uses the project's title, organization, role, date and brief to look for what you would want to know: what the company does, its technology and direction, recent news, the role's actual requirements and, for a meeting or a sales call, who the other party is and what they are likely to care about.
  • It finds the real posting. When the job description is not public, the research looks for the posting through the recruiter or agency, and if details stay unclear it says so and suggests questions to ask.
  • It fits you. It reads a short profile drawn from your own CV or profile source so the notes fit you, and it is told not to research you or your own company, only the other side and the role.
  • You see it work. Each web search, the pages found and the notes as they are written appear live, then the notes are saved.
  • Cited notes, saved as a source. The result is written in your project's language, with links to the pages it used, and saved as a source of the project. Researching again replaces the earlier notes instead of adding a copy.
  • Everywhere. Research Online runs in the web app, on the Mac and on the phone. A project that has no research suggests it.
  • Pro. Research Online is part of MagicInterview Pro.

Why it matters#

The best answer is usually the one that shows you know the company. Doing that research by hand takes an hour you may not have, and it rarely ends up in a form you can use mid-conversation. Research Online turns it into notes that live next to your CV, so a suggested answer can mention the product the company just launched, or the problem named in the posting.

How to use it#

  1. Open the project for the interview, meeting or client, and check that the organization, role and brief are filled in. The better the brief, the better the research.
  2. Choose Research Online and watch the steps. It takes a short while.
  3. Read the notes in the project's sources. Follow the links for anything that matters, because the notes are a starting point, not a verdict.
  4. Edit the notes if something is wrong or add your own.

To research, MagicInterview sends the project's title, organization, role, date and brief, plus a short profile drawn from your sources, to Exa, which searches the public web. Read the Privacy Policy and the Subprocessors page for the details.

Research Online is in the web app and the Android app on Google Play now. The iPhone, iPad and Mac apps get it with their App Store release, which is in review.
